International Women’s Day 2017, The Cycling Version

Today is International Women’s Day 2017. I hope you noticed and are either praising yourself or someone else in your life.

Eileen Sheridan cyclist
This is cycling

Above is Eileen Sheridan, all 4ft 11in of her.

In 1954 she broke the Land’s End to John O’Groats record, although the record was disallowed by the Women’s Road Records Association because the Daily Mail had an article about her going for the record and publicity was not allowed, I feel times may now have changed.

Even more incredible is that after doing the ride in 2 days, 11 hours and 7 minutes she turned her bike around and went for the 1000 mile record. Completing that record in 3 days and 1 hour. A record that stood for 48 years, only broken in 2002 and by Lynne Taylor. Could you do this?

“Hercules supplied the most bizarre support vehicle ever seen until the Mad Max movies. A caravan was strapped to a vast Bedford low-loader, and a large toilet ostentatiously installed on the front. Access to the monster was via a ladder, and when Eileen needed a comfort break, then the whole world knew about it. Her hands were blistered because there was no padding on the bars, just a winding of rough tape, and she kept going on blackcurrant juice, soup, sugar and chicken legs.”

The above quote comes from Ramin Minovi. Hercules was a bike company that sponsored her in case you were wondering. See who needs mystery packages?

In carrying on today’s theme of woman you are way cooler than you. I give you Angie Marino’s Chick Flick BMX section.

I need to go and get my 20″ built back up.
